Tropical Traditions, a name trusted to provide quality Coconut Oil, also has high quality, certified USDA organic, palm oil. Palm Oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does.
Palm oil is not widely used any longer in the US but is the most heavily consumed dietary oil in the world after soybean oil. Most of the world’s soybean oil is consumed in the US.
“Palm oil traditionally has been used for baking, shortenings, margarines and deep fat frying, as it is shelf stable with a high melting point and does NOT require hydrogenation. Therefore, it contains no trans fatty acids. Saturated fats, such as tropical oils like palm and coconut, as well as butter, have traditionally been considered healthy fats and oils. In modern history, commercial interests have condemned saturated fats and replaced them in the American diet with polyunsaturated fats that are hydrogenised and contain trans fatty acids, which most people now consider harmful. These trans fatty acids were banned in some European countries as early as 2004, and food label laws in the US just forced manufacturers to list trans fats in their products last year. Some cities in the US are now banning trans fats in restaurants as well.”
I am enjoying using the Tropical Traditions Palm Shortening in our whole wheat biscuits. While the shortening itself has no taste, it seems to accentuate the nutty flavor of the fresh ground whole wheat flour. They have great recipes at FreeCoconutRecipes.com
You May Purchase It! At Tropical Traditions.com you may purchase 1 gallon for $35.75.
You May Win It! I am pleased to offer one Dimes2Vines readers a gallon of Palm Shortening! This giveaway will end on May 29, 2010 at 11:59pm CST and is open to all US residents. Mandatory Entry Question - According to the book, how often do men’s fashions change? Answer: Every few centuries. Before the modern era, men’s and women’s fashions changed with similar frequency. The tailored man’s suit emerged in the 19th century and has changed very little since then.

101 Things I Learned in Fashion School is a book written by Alfredo Cabrera. Alfredo is a fashion designer, teacher and illustrator who has taught and served as critic at Parsons The New School for Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute and the Altos de Chavon School of Design.
The world of fashion is brought to vivid life with 101 introductory lessons on such topics as how a designer anticipates cultural trends and “sees” the fashion consumer, the workings of the fashion calendar, the ways a designer collection is conceived, the manufacture of fabric, fashion illustration, and more.
Some of the interesting tips I learned include the fact that satin is a weave, not a fabric, taking measurements with ease, why jeans have maintained there appeal and who does what in the fashion industry – from the fashion designer to the sample-hand and machine operator.

Squiggle On-The-Go by Random Line. Have you ever heard of it? I had not until … I had this review/ giveaway opportunity. RandomLine creates mind-exercising games and activity pads that encourage children, as well as, adults to be creative.
What is a Squiggle? A squiggle is a random line – squiggly, wiggly or wavy – the start of something. The object is to transform the squiggly line, using your imagination, into the shape determined by the spin of the wheel.
My children love it! It is like a doodling pad in the form of a game! We were sent a Barnyard Squiggle pad but they also carry an Ocean, Outdoors, Safari, Bugs and many other On-The-Go Pads. They even have an educational series which includes the alphabet, shapes and colors. There is a Squiggle On-The-Go Pad to interest all children (and adults).
Squiggle On-The-Go is a pad of paper with a different squiggly line on each piece of paper. The pad is backed with a colorful cardboard backing that contains a pencil and a wheel to spin, which tells you what to draw. The wheel for the Barnyard On-The-Go has different animals on it. While it is designed for ages 4 and up, I found it more appropriate for ages 7 and up. (Little boys just must not be quite as creative as little girls!). Actually, in our family, my husband is better at it than the rest of us!
You May Purchase It! At RandomLine.com you may purchase the Squiggle On-The-Go Pads for $4.99-$14.99. You can also find a store near you under the “Where to Buy” tab.
You May Win It! I am pleased to offer one Dimes2Vines reader a Squiggle On-The-Go Pad of your choice! This giveaway will end on May 15, 2010 at 11:59pm CST and is open to all US residents. Are you a coffee lover? I certainly am! Whether it is a full bodied, dark roasted or a flavored coffee, I enjoy drinking a cup throughout my day.
Community Coffee is a brand which is “steeped in tradition”. Founded by the Saurage family, it is the largest family-owned retail coffee brand in the US. Over 90 years ago, Henry Norman “Cap” Saurage brewed his popular coffee in a small country store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He named it “Community” in honor of his loyal friends and customers. Eventually turning his attention from the country store to coffee, the company has grown to be known as the State Coffee of Louisiana.
I was pleased to have the opportunity to review Community Coffee’s Handwoven Mother’s Day Gift Basket. This limited edition, handwoven gourmet gift basket included a 12 oz. Private Reserve® House Blend ground coffee, a 34 oz. Chambord French Press, along with a Community® Coffee signature coffee scoop. Everything came nested in a one-of-a-kind basket made from Hiraca Palm, indigenous to the Colombian region.

The coffee was delicious and there is nothing that brings out the flavor of coffee better that being prepared in a French Press coffee maker. We use a French Press coffee maker all the time and have for about a year now. If you have not tried it, you should. This gift basket would make a wonderful gift for your Mother or yourself! (The cups and saucers pictured are not included!)
You May Purchase It! The Handwoven Mother’s Day Basket may be purchased at Community Coffee for $44.95.

Everyone is going “green” and Rachel at I Green Mommy is no exception. She is a stay at home mom who makes handcrafted/handmade products which are centered around the “green” theme. She uses recycled, reused, and scrap items to make her products which she sell at her I Green Mommy esty shop.
While she will not say she “never” buys any supplies, she tries to limit her purchased items and instead be creative with what is on hand. Because of this, many of her items are one of a kind! Products on sale at her etsy shop now include: facial cleansing pads, facial scubby pads, eco lunch box kit, water resistent eco lunch kit, aprons, little girl sundresses, snack baggie sets, coupon keepers, eco friendly reusable pad to fit a swiffer for dusting and mopping, reusable grocery totes and much more! Take a minute to visit and see all her creative products.
Rachel made a matching mother/daughter apron set for me in blue, trimmed with flowered ruffles. Rachel purposely gave them a rough/unfinished look by serging the edges, since she did not have the bias edging to match (it fits with her “green” theme!). One of my favorite things about the child’s apron is the elastic in the neck piece which attaches with velcro. The velcro closure is so much easier that tying! This velcro, tie, or one size fits all slip over neckband is available upon request. She has been kind enough to offer one of my readers a set!
You May Purchase It! These are available at I Green Mommy etsy shop for approximately $22.
You May Win It! I am pleased to offer one Dimes2Vines readers a matching mother/daughter apron! This giveaway will end on April 24, 2010 at 11:59pm CST and is open to all US residents. T-shirts – who doesn’t love them! They are comfortable, easy to care for and can be so funny. SnorgTees started as a company in May of 2004 by a group of friends realizing they were not cut our for “real” jobs! Narrowing their options down to either becoming international jewel thieves or internet t-shirt tycoons, they decided on the t-shirts. Why? It was the middle of the summer and they could not find enough ski masks! I think they made a great decision!
Most of their designs are created by employees but many are also sent by customers. So, if you have an idea and would like to see it on a t-shirt – send it to them! They have many designs available and some are so funny – I love looking through them all! They have them in men’s, women’s and children’s sizes and even carry hoodies.
I really like the “If Life Gives You Lemons – Keep Them – They are Free” t-shirt I was sent – because, you can always make lemonade! Printed on 100% cotton fabric, the t-shirt itself is of good quality fabric and is a great weight. I will definitely be using these for some gift items! But, shhhh, don’t tell my family!

You May Purchase It! At SnorgTees the average t-shirt is $18.95.
You May Win It! I am pleased to offer one Dimes2Vines readers a SnorgTee of their choice! This giveaway will end on April 17, 2010 at 11:59pm CST and is open to all US residents. How to Never Look Fat Again – is it possible without dieting?
We have all heard of high-fat, low-fat and no-fat foods! But, how about applying those same terms to the clothes you wear? Charla Krupp, author of “How to Never Look Fat Again” has done just that. All women want to look thinner and more stylish, and now you can. Charla recommends a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise but also teaches you how to determine if an item of clothing is fattening or not. It is as easy as steering clear of high-fat clothes – those which make you look flabby and frumpy – and wear no-fat as often as possible. You can look thinner by tonight!
“How to Never Look Fat Again” covers such topics as:
- Easy ways to hide arm flap, a big bust, a muffin top, back fat, a big belly, a big booty, thunder thighs, heavy calves…
- High fat fabric colors and styles which make you look fat and those which melt the pounds away.
- Solutions for workout gear, evening wear and swimsuits.
- Charla’s “Brilliant Buys” and a list of products to avoid.
Charla Krup is a nationally known style expert who appeared for ten years on the Today show. She is a contributing editor to “People: Style Watch” and was formerly beauty director at “Glamour”, a senior editor at “In Style” and a fashion columnist at “More”. Her credentials are extensive and impressive!
My daughters and I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is filled with information which we found to be very helpful. Charla’s advise is practical and makes sense when we began looking at our wardrobes. It is true that if you must ask “Does this make me look fat?” you already know the answer! I would recommend this book to everyone!

Stella & Dot has a new stylist – ME! I was so impressed when I began reviewing Stella & Dot, not only with their jewelry but also the company and its policies – that I was hooked. Named after grandmothers, Stella and Dot, Jessica Herrin, CEO and founder, has created a modern home-based company with irresistible products. - Couture Design – Their trend setting pieces are designed in New York and San Francisco by award winning designers.
- Affordable Luxury – While there are higher priced pieces, plenty of styles are under $50.
- Style Statement – Their pieces turn even jeans into a high fashion statement.
Stella & Dot pieces are being worn by celebrities and have been featured in such magazines as “In Style”, “Oprah”, “Lucky” and “People”.

Tutu anyone? Whether it is to play dress up, be a fairy or a princess, or just to wear around, tutus are in style!
I am excited to introduce you to Christen from the Etsy shop, Repunzels Bows ‘n Clips. She is the wonderful creator of beautiful tutus – for “little” girls and “big” girls. Yes, with a tutu, storybook time is here! What is more feminine, fun, fluffy and fanciful than a tutu? They come in all colors of the rainbow, embellished or not, and each of high quality tulle. They can be made sassy and short, or long and elegant.
Christen is the mother of four children. Having always been a crafter at heart she has found her niche making primarily tutus, bows and clips. Recently, she has teamed up with her sister and friend’s company and together they are called Spoiled Sweet. She enjoys working with both ladies and loves the fact that she can set her own hours, doing what she enjoys most – being creative.
Christine’s tutus are made with a waistband of elastic in these basic measurements: Infant (16″-19″), Toddler (19″-21″) and size 6-8 (21″ +). They can also be custom made by simply sending her the desired waist measurement. They are not just for little girls – even big girls are wearing them over their jeans!
In addition, Christen also makes beautiful bows to match any tutu as well as many other styles. With sizes from “infant” to “big girls”, she has something for everyone.
Christen sent me two tutus – one for my 17 mth old daughter and another for my 3 yr old granddaughter. The girls fell in love with them immediately! In fact, my 17 mth old does not want to take hers off. Even her 4 yr old brother wanted to try it on – there is definitely something magical about them! As a seamstress myself, I always dreaded working with tulle – it is so fine, delicate and easy to tangle. Christen does a wonderful job and her workmanship is excellent. She is a pleasure to work with.
You May Purchase It! There are so many colors and styles to choose from! And, not only in tutus but also in the bows and clips! Just go to Christen’s Etsy shop, Repunzels Bows ‘n Clips and place your order. Good luck – it is hard to decide which one to pick!

Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil is produced in the Philippines by small scale, family businesses. They use only the highest quality, hand selected, organic coconuts for their Gold Label brand. To earn the designation as the Gold Label Standard , the product is tested to show that it contains the highest amounts of antioxidants available in Virgin Coconut Oil. In addition to high levels of antioxidants, it also contains lauric acid which is found in mother’s milk.
Uses for coconut oil include:
- Cooking – Coconut oil is an all purpose oil. Great for everything from frying to replacing butter in your everyday cooking. It is a choice oil because of its high antioxidant content. Need recipes? Tropical Traditions has plenty of great sounding free coconut recipes!
- Hair Treatment – Coconut oil is able to penetrate the hair shaft thus reducing protein loss in damaged, as well as, undamaged hair. It can be used for dry scalp and as a conditioner.
- Skin Care – With its high levels of antioxidants, virgin coconut oil is a choice base oil for skin care products. Whether it is moisturizers, soaps or deodorants, all of Tropical Traditions products show higher levels of antioxidants than others.
Upon delivery, my jar had solidified! I found out that this is characteristic of coconut oil when stored below 76F. This was easy to remedy – I simply placed the jar in warm water to re-liquify. After opening, it is unnecessary to refrigerate coconut oil.
I had never used coconut oil before so it has been fun experimenting! While trying it successfully in several recipes, one of our favorite items to use it in has become pancakes. It gives a wonderful hint of coconut flavor. The oil itself has such a smooth coconut flavor – it really reminds you of the tropics!

You May Purchase It! You may purchase direct from TropicalTraditions.com. They have coconut oil products which include: Gold Label Standard Coconut Oil, skin care, hair care, household goods, pet products, recipes and books.
You May Win It! I am pleased to offer one Dimes2Vines readers a 32 oz jar of Tropical Traditions Gold Label Standard Coconut Oil. This giveaway will end on March 20, 2010 at 11:59pm CST and is open to all US residents. The winner will be posted here and notified by email. Please be sure to leave contact information.

About Me
God has amazingly blessed me, Dina-Marie, with a wonderful husband and 10 beautiful children. Moving from our "secure" life in Alabama to the "exciting" life of starting a vineyard in west Texas has been challenging to say the least. I have had the opportunity to take a crash course in frugal living and become a real farm girl - complete with milk cow and chickens. I have learned the importance of health from the inside out, "traditional" cooking and cod liver oil!
I hope to encourage you to make the most of where you are and what you have.
